Oskar Blues Ten FIDY Imperial Stout
A top recommendation from Taylor, the beer manager

I can not remember when I have been as giddy for a beer to show up in the store (ok, fine, it was in September when Stone Brewing Company finally arrived in RI), and honestly I had no idea I would be this excited. My delivery guy shows up and hands me my invoice. I start laughing, giggling like a school girl, jumping up and down, and dancing and singing in the aisle.

“Is this good?” he asked. He is not a beer guy per se but he wants to know about the stuff he sells.

“Is it good? Actually it’s great, it got an A on beer advocate, it’s, like, one of top five stouts in the country!”  My product euphoria was still raging!

“And we got it?  That’s cool.”

Yes, yes, it is.  The Ten FIDY is a big, rather MASSIVE, thick stout.  It is bursting at the seams of the can at 10 % ABV.  It pours out black, and I mean pitch black, with a dark tan head that just peaks out.  The mouth feel is fantastic- it is big and viscous. Deep chocolate, coffee, sweetness seem to dominate the palate, through a perfect spice and dryness from the hops creep into the back of the palate.

Super Hereos

Like the masked heroes of our cartoons and movies, these porters are doing great things while hiding behind their own clever disguise- obscurity. Fear not, we plan to expose their true identity. Because of their excellence, even in obscurity, they are a blessing for the advocacy of beer.  Their funny names are an obstacle no more; from this day forth they deserve to be household beers. Like their other super hero brethren, Sinebrychoff and D. Carnegie, from Finland and Sweden respectively, inspire others to follow in greatness.

Sinebrychoff Porter- The underlying theme here is Sinebrychoff’s utter drinkablity.  One of the singularly great efforts for a Baltic Porter, it offers a fantastic nose of chocolate (milk and a touch of dark), earth, tobacco, and a note of sweetness.  On the palate, it displays plenty of chocolate and malt, and although the nose is a little sweet, it finishes dry and balanced.

$2.99 per bottle

D. Carnegie Stark Porter- Pure and delicious.  It is vintage dated 2006 and it promises to hold until 2016.  Because of a touch of hops, this porter has little more bitterness, and along with the coffee and chocolate notes, it is almost stout-like. Though, on the palate, it screams “I’m a Porter and proud of it” with its dark malts, medium body weight, and focused nature.  It will be a stunner with a few years of age as it becomes more balanced, integrated, and soft.

Under the Radar Belgians

We love our Belgians and tasted many of bottles to find just the right offerings!

Everybody knows the names of the Trappist Breweries, of St. Bernardus, of Duvel, of Fantome, of the Chouffes, but the following three are some of the not so well known. They are dynamite examples of Belgian craftsmanship and are worthy of paparazzi-like attention.

Kasteel Bruin- Holy Brown Ale Heaven, Batman!  Can a brown ale really be this good? This is Taylor’s personal favorite right now, and it’s proving its worth as a customer favorite as well.  A well developed complexity of dark fruits, dark malts, caramel, sweet cream, and Belgium sugar.  Smooth and decadent.

$7.49 per 750 ml

Van Eecke Poperings Hommel Ale- Hommel means hop in the local Dialect in and around the town of Poperinge, hence the name for this slightly hoppy Belgian. It is essentially a golden ale with the typical yeasty, Belgium candy, flowers, and honey but with a spicy, citrus-y, grassy mid palate and finish.  Don’t get scared by the double amount of hops, because they add tons of complexity that make the taste buds very, very happy! One heck of a pleasurable ale!

$7.99 per 750 ml

Malheur 10- If you love Duvel, then check out this delectable 10. Classified as a Belgian Strong Ale with 10% ABV it is no light weight. Despite it being a high gravity beer, it is refreshing, balanced, and beautiful.  It is floral, spicy, with the typical Belgium candied nose, while on the palate it shows orchard fruits (green apples), spices, and a slight earthiness. It finishes dry and refreshing.

$8.49 per 750 ml
